Derrick Lewis vs Travis Browne

Derrick Lewis made good on his promise on Sunday night, as he knocked Travis Browne out cold in the second round of their UFC Fight Night 105 main event bout in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

‘The Black Beast’ found himself in trouble early on as Browne landed a series of vicious body kicks that left Lewis in visible pain that would last even after the bout was over, but after ‘Hapa’ kept overextending and Lewis made him pay. Several powerful right hands and follow up flurries against the cage left Travis Browne wobbled, and it was only a matter of time after that.

“I knew it was over because he always do his famous baby deer walk,” The Black Beast told the FS1 trio of Karyn Bryant, Dominick Cruz, and Gilbert Melendez.

Lewis clipped Browne in round two and brutal follow-up punches on the ground, along with negligence from veteran referee Mario Yamasaki, led to ‘Hapa’ being knocked unconscious.

Derrick Lewis was ranked #8 in the heavyweight division before UFC Fight Night Halifax, and he likely won’t advance in the rankings after beating #9 Travis Browne, and although he initially refused to name an opponent in favor of demanding 3 months rest — he did call out #7 heavyweight, ‘The Super Samoan’ Mark Hunt on the Fox Sports 1 post-fight show.

Mark Hunt will face off against Alistair Overeem in a heavyweight rematch from their 2008 encounter in Japan, but should he get past ‘The Reem,’ a fight with ‘The Black Beast’ would make a lot of sense.

In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC Welterweight Champion Johny Hendricks made a successful middleweight debut against Hector Lombard. Hendricks didn’t look like the ‘Bigg Rigg’ of old, but he looked a lot better than he has in his previous few fights — and not dealing with a self-imposed hellacious weight cut seemed to have a positive impact on both his attitude and performance inside the cage.
